I remember the day I listened to ‘SO BAD’ for the first time. "This group is special". We all felt it, but we had to wait. We see groups with incredibly promising debuts disappoint because of the high standards they set for themselves early on. If STAYC could hold out, we would see magic blossom in the k-pop scene again.
Two singles later, we arrive at ’STEREOTYPE’. In the lead up to this album, their company has been exceptional with promotion. Their concept A preview reminded many of the greatness of f(x)’s Pink Tape art film. I naturally grew excited. However, what really stole my attention was the highlight medley. Nothing about the songs could be discerned, it was purely vocals. Their strengths are clear and they didn't waste any time showing them off.
STAYC has managed to create distinct personality for themselves using experienced producers and unique vocals. Currently, there is a sea of 4th generation girl groups who have opted for the badass teen-crush reminiscent of girl-crush naturalists, BLACKPINK. I felt that something had to shift. Too many groups are operating on the same plane. STAYC's team knew that and constructed their group around a bright and bouncy sound. If this was all that STAYC brought to the table, we would not feel this magic. STAYC is unique because they add a refreshing quality to their music and image that cannot be replicated easily. Their vocals and production are in perfect sync.
I believe this culminates really well with their most recent mini, STEREOTYPE. STEREOTYPE [single] is centred on a flute melody. Yet, its the sharp and bouncy vocals that lift the song to greater heights. The chorus is equal parts catchy and a strong display of vocal flair. However, the standout section is the outro. Among the group, Isa shines. Cleverly reducing the instrumentation when she sings makes her stand out even more.
STAYC take a left turn with the 2nd song, ‘I’LL BE THERE’. They slowed down the flow and force the listener, to listen. The simple rnb instrumentation highlights their vocals. Its impossible not to admire their strength. The chorus in particular directs us to pay attention. ‘SLOW DOWN’ the oxymoron, speeds up the pace with tropical house. Unlike the dreadful year of 2017, this version of tropical house is light and flavourful. The rap in the 2nd verse was well placed and nicely executed to maintain the bouncy movement of the song.
STAYC don’t finish their first mini album on a dull note. Although 'COMPLEX' also includes rnb elements, it is quite different from 'I'LL BE THERE'. STAYC end with a song frustrated yearning, "Complex, my complex. Because of you no, I can't". Rather than opting for an inauthentic gloomy ballad, they remain faithful to the energy of the album.
Minis are the most difficult album type to perfect and the STAYC girls made it look easy. They were precise and clean, shifting through styles and tempos like they’ve been doing it for decades. As the 12 minutes pass, you’re left with the urge to root for this group.
STAYC’s discography is small, but mighty. Their sound is strong, unique and well-executed. I haven’t seen a 4th generation girl group like that since GWSN. They have the potential to become one of the leading acts in the new generation of k-pop. We are now moving towards seeing the first full albums of 4th generation girl groups, and I cannot wait to see what STAYC do when their time comes.
STEREOTYPE reminds us that k-pop can be amazing when done right.
